Solar Plant for 100 kW Installation

Introduction:

The solar plant plays a pivotal role in our daily activities. The degree of development of a country is measured by the amount of utilization of energy by human beings. Energy demand is increasing day by day due to the increase in population, urbanization, and industrialization.

The world's fossil fuel supply will be depleted in a few hundred years. The rate of energy consumption increasing, and supply is depleting resulting in inflation and energy shortage. This is called the energy crisis. Hence alternative or renewable sources of energy have to be developed to meet future energy requirements.

The principle of solar power plants is quite simple. They consist of a field of solar photovoltaic modules connected in series and parallel and connected to one or more inverters.
Solar energy is directly transformed into electricity and then connected to the Low Voltage distribution grid in the academic area of IIT KGP.

The basic block diagram of the 100 kW solar plant is shown in Fig 1.

This solar plant mainly consists of

  1. 400 Solar Panels
  2. DC String Array and Combiner Box
  3. Two Inverters (PCU)
  4. AC Distribution Box
  5. Plant AC Energy Meter
  6. Data Acquisition System
PV Array:
The total solar PV array installed capacity is 100k W. Individual PV module rating is 250 watts. The PV array consists of framed multi-crystalline. A suitable number of solar PV modules are connected in the series string and a suitable number of series strings are connected in parallel to formulate a series-parallel array.


The maximum DC output voltage of the array is nearly 600 V. It consists of impact-resistant low iron and high transmission toughened glass.

PCU:

There are two PCU used to convey the DC power produced by SPV modules into AC power and adjust the voltage and frequency levels to the local grid connection. Those PCUs  are total MPPTs.
